In the proposed research we hypothesise that LA-MRSA can acquire antimicrobial resistance from other S. aureus and Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) or vice versa in the same ecological niche, and that this may also be the case in LA-MRSA belonging to other than the ST398 clonal lineage. In addition we will analyse whether LA-MRSA and CoNS mutually support their persistence in the environment, and that biofilm formation and quorum-sensing interactions as well as subinhibitory antibiotic concentrations may play a significant role in this process.
