This project aims to identify novel and – for staphylococci – unusual antimicrobial resistance genes among MRSA/MSSA strains. As it is important to understand which processes lead to the occurrence of such resistances in staphylococci, plasmids and other mobile genetic elements that carry novel resistance genes shall be identified, sequenced and analysed with regard to co-located resistance genes, but also biocide tolerance genes and genes that may play a role in biofilm formation. The following objectives will be addressed:

Analysis of non-typeable SCCmec cassettes for integrated resistance elements.
